Speedy Tacos

This recipe uses store-bought salsa and taco seasoning to make a super-quick taco filling from TVP. The TVP has a texture similar to shredded chicken when cooked. Wrap in a flour tortilla or stuff in a hard shell with lettuce, tomatoes and beans.
Ingredients:
2 cups TVP (textured vegetable protein) 2 cups water 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tbsp olive or vegetable oil 1 package taco seasoning ½ cup dehydrated bell peppers 1 cup dehydrated refried beans 1/4 cup salsa flour tortillas or taco shells Preparation: In a large skillet, heat the water over medium heat, and add the TVP, stirring well. Allow the TVP to reconstitute for 2-3 minutes. In a separate bowl, reconstitute the bell peppers. Do the same with the refried beans Add oil and soy sauce, then peppers and taco seasoning, stirring well. Allow to cook for another 3-5 minutes, stirring frequently. Mix in salsa and remove from heat. Serve wrapped in a flour tortilla or hard taco shells. You can also add tomatoes, lettuce, or what ever your garden provides.

Supplies

Aside from your pump action or semi-auto 12 guage, a can of Spam, your favorite fixed blade knife and a good loyal dog, one of the most important Survival items you can own is a good pair of boots.  I don't mean those that are mass produced in China or Taiwan that are made from a material that resembles leather, I'm talking about those that are hand-made, using top quality hide.

Sure you can pick up a pair of good looking boots for 50 bucks, but what if that was the last pair you were able to buy...  Are they going to last?  Last time I checked there are not many Cobblers left anymore.  What are you going to do when the stitching tears or the sole starts to peal away?

It's better to save up your pennies and purchase the best pair you can afford.  Stay away from the chain-stores.  You'll be hard-pressed to find the type of quality that you are going to need.  Personally,  I recommend that people look for a sturdy boot that comes above the ankle and is also light weight.  The reason for looking for a light weight boot is that you're not climbing mountains or fighting a Wildland Fire.  You need an every day boot that won't slow you down should you have to escape an area.  In other words... run!

This is one of the best boots that I've found.  It's not cheap, but it's quality and meets the requirements that I look for in a Survival Boot.  I found these at Endless.com.  I'll try to post a link for to them.

Here's some general foot care suggestions that help you avoid problems with your feet:

  • Wash your feet daily. Rinse off all soap and dry thoroughly, especially between toes.
  • Trim nails straight across, and not too short. Don't cut out or dig at corners.
  • Do not trim, shave, or use over-the-counter medicines to dissolve corns or calluses
  • Wear clean socks or stockings, changed daily. Don't wear any that are too short or too tight.
  • Wear shoes that fit.
Some people's feet sweat more than others, and are more prone to athlete's foot. These tips may help:
  • Wear shoes made of leather or canvas - not synthetics. Sandals are good.
  • Switch shoes from day to day.
  • Use foot powder.
  • Seek medical help if severe problems persist.

Remember to care for your feet and treat them well to a good pair of boots.

Survival Cook Books

I am happy to report that my newest book has gone through the first edit. It's in for the second editing and hopefully this will be the last. I'm so anxious to get this book out to all of you. It has been so much fun to do. The nice thing about writing a cook book is all of the "research", the cooking and eating (the eating is my favorite part).

This line of Cook Books is geared for all of those who have worked hard building a survival pantry. And the reason for these books; is that if "the doodie hits the fan", we'll have to start using those goods stored up in our pantries, but let's be honest... when you're under stress like that, you won't be too creative in the kitchen. These books will help you.

I've read a lot of cook books on how to use dried goods, rice and beans, and those meals will keep you alive, providing you can get everyone to eat them. If you have children, you know what I mean. I know that if a person is hungry enough they'll eat anything, but why let it get to that when you have the products that can make delicious meals. You just need the recipes and that's what my books will give you.

Many of these, are the same recipes that we use for our own line of Survival Meals. I'm not "plugging" these products, just pointing out that these recipes offer tasty, healthy meals. In fact, in our house this is all we use and because of it, our health is great, our panty gets rotated more often, we don't have to worry about spoilage, and our food bill has dropped drastically. I know you'll enjoy these meals, plus save money on your food bill.

Well, back to work. I just wanted to give an update to those that had been asking. It's almost done... YIPPEE!
